Welcome To Aquinnah

Aquinnah is a small town located on the western end of Martha’s Vineyard, an island off the coast of Massachusetts. The town was originally inhabited by the Wampanoag Native American tribe, and was known as Gay Head until 1998, when the town voted to change its name to Aquinnah, which means “land under the hill” in the Wampanoag language.

In the 19th century, Aquinnah became known for its vibrant whaling industry, which brought prosperity to the town. However, as whaling declined in the late 1800s, many residents left Aquinnah to seek opportunities elsewhere.

Today, Aquinnah is known for its stunning natural beauty, including the striking red clay cliffs that line the town’s beaches. The town is also home to the Gay Head Lighthouse, which has been in operation since 1856 and is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the United States.

Aquinnah is an ideal place to live for those who value a laid-back, small-town lifestyle with easy access to beautiful natural surroundings. The town has a strong sense of community, and residents enjoy a range of outdoor activities, including hiking, fishing, and beachcombing. Additionally, Aquinnah is home to the Wampanoag Aquinnah Cultural Center, which celebrates the town’s Native American heritage and offers educational programs and events for residents and visitors alike.
