Welcome To Edgartown
Edgartown is a town located on the island of Martha’s Vineyard, off the coast of Massachusetts. The town was first settled in 1642 and was named after Edgar, the son of James II. During the 18th and 19th centuries, Edgartown became a major whaling port, and many of the elegant homes built by the whaling captains still stand today.
In the mid-20th century, Edgartown began to attract more tourists, drawn by the town’s picturesque harbor and beaches. Today, Edgartown is a popular vacation spot known for its charming downtown area, historic homes, and excellent restaurants.
There are many reasons why Edgartown is an ideal place to live. The town has a strong sense of community, with many local events and festivals throughout the year. The town is also very safe, with a low crime rate and friendly neighbors.
For those who love the outdoors, Edgartown offers plenty of opportunities for hiking, fishing, and boating. The town has several beaches, including South Beach, which is considered one of the most beautiful beaches in New England.
In terms of education, Edgartown has a great public school system, and there are also several private schools on the island. For those who work in Boston or other cities on the mainland, Edgartown is easily accessible by ferry or plane.
Overall, Edgartown offers a high quality of life, with a strong sense of community, natural beauty, and easy access to amenities and opportunities.
The Edgartown Lighthouse was built in 1828 at the entrance of Edgartown Harbor. The necessity for a lighthouse at this location was precipitated by the large number of vessels frequenting the harbor during the whaling boom of the late 1700s and early 1800s. The original Edgartown Light was a wooden, Cape Cod Style, two-story Keeper’s house built on wood spiles a short distance offshore in shallow water. This first Edgartown Light was destroyed in the Hurricane of 1938. In 1939, the United States Coast Guard demolished the existing buildings and installed an 1881 vintage cast-iron tower relocated from Ipswich Rear Range Light.
